Our thriller was seen by all as media students in our college. We received written and verbal feedback from our audience. Here is a questionnaire that was filled out by one of our audience members and a word cloud of how our film was described.

1) Choose one aspect of film language that has been used especially well in this movie an say why
In this film they have used a very good location, both train station and office. Also the props used made the office look realistic, for example the computer as it has written on it Metropolitan police and its logo. Also the colours used for example the red lipstick is very bold and stands out, it give the audience of person the character is.

2) Choose one aspect of film language that could be improved in this movie and explain how.

The dialogue can be improved as I could understand what the police officer was saying on the phone.


3) Can you recognise any stereotypes in this movie?


The police uniform and office was very typical, also the way the women was dressed was stereotypical, as if all bad girls dress and act like that.

4) Can you think of any intertextual references with any other movies when you watch this movie? Explain.
This film reminds me of a book I read called Confessions of a Working girl. The reason why it reminds me of the book is because of the way the women is dressed and the way she look suspicious like she is up to something.

5) Who do you think would be the audience for this movie?

I think the audience is teenage girls aged between 14 and 18 as the twist to the story will interest them.

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in task progression from it to the full product?

My skills have progressed a lot since the preliminary task. I have learnt how to focus the camera to get a clearer shot. I also learnt how to match cut scenes better and do continuous editing. I also learnt how to make a full soundtrack and how to add titles to the clip which I didn’t know how to do.

The films can be compared under the blogs called prelim and final edit.

6) What have you learned about technologies from process of construction this product?

We used a video drive to store all our work on . We used a card reader to get our work from the camera on to the computer . We used a camera to film our thriller . we used SD memory card to film on. We used http://www.blogger.com/ to upload our work and record our development on internet.We used the programs LiveType , Final cut pro and Soundtrack Pro to edit our film and make titles and soundtrack for it.

The hardware such as the memory card made uploading quicker more efficient as we did not have to log and capture which is a painstakingly long process which I found in other projects prior to my a-level course in media. The camera improved the visuals and made my film clear and in focus.The apple mac computers where difficult to use at first (the mouse having no right click and the software being different to Microsoft) but as the weeks progressed using the became easier.

Lisa 18 , is a student in London .She loves going to the cinema, clubbing and shopping with friends. She works part-time in Top Shop. She listens to pop and R&B music and downloads her music from the legal music downloading site; iTunes. She regularly watches trailers for films on Youtube.

I would distribute our thriller opening on a website such as http://www.youtube.com/ which is a popular website for sharing videos I may also upload it on social networking website such as facebook and myspace to a bigger audience. I will also invite people to a small screening og my film on these sites.

The target audience for our thriller is young adults aged 16- 25, that like watching thrillers and going out with friends . I will get my audience through sending messages on facebook and myspace and spreading the word round to my friends to watch the video. I would also use other video upload sites that are similar to youtube.com. Other audiences for my film include the people coming to view it at the screen on the green cinema. I will gain my feedback thorough questionnaires and comments received on my videos on social networking and video websites.

I could also hand out flyers to people with the links to watch the film or an invitaion to come see the film at the screening

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

While we was planning our film we used a website www.artofthetitle.com to help gather ideas for our opening scene the openings I have chosen to compare my film to are ‘Saturday night fever’ and ‘marathon man’.

The opening of ‘Saturday Night fever’, which is not a thriller film gave us an idea for our titles.

In the opening of ‘Marathon Man’ which is a thriller we see a man running whilst cross cutting to a man putting something in a locker. In our film opening we see a young woman walking to a train station and then it cross cuts to a detective walking to her office. Our opening constantly cross cuts from one to the other. This is called parallel editing. The thriller 'Marathon Man' gave us lots of ideas of what type of shots and music to use for our film.

Editing

I edited our shots using Final cut Pro on the Apple Mac computers to edit out glitches, mistakes we made and to make our film continuous. Each of our shots where cut down to 7 seconds so we did not loose the interest of our audience. I also added a fade at the beginning and the end of our film. Once the editing was finished I edited in titles that where made on Live Type. Throughout our film there is parallel edit.

Sound

In our film we had no diegetic sounds. All none diegetic sounds where created using Apple Mac computers. I kept the soundtrack rather simple by mostly having piano instrumentals to make it sound thrilling and suspenseful. The software Soundtrack pro has a large variety and variation of different sounds and sound effects. It was rather hard to choose which sounds we wanted for our soundtrack as there was such a large variety.

Camera work

We used lots of different camera shots and angles in our opening sequence. We used close-ups of the face to show facial expressions. Tracking shots to follow characters whilst walking. Medium shots and long shots to show characters and their surroundings. We also used high angle shots to convey a sense of vulnerability within the audience. We focus on two charecters by using tracking shots , close ups and many other shots. We also have shots of certain props, shoes,etc.

Mise en scene

We picked London fields train station as our location to film and a teachers office. We picked the train station as it is a bit run down and urban to create suspence for our film. The office was a good location as it looked like a detectives office because it had lots of props files , computer, pens etc. Other props that where used in our film where cigarettes, a ring, a nail, a glass of water and painkillers. The detective was dressed very smart (shirt , tie , etc ) and the young woman was very dressed up (heels, Red lipstick ,etc)

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The thriller opening we made represents a young social group aged 16- 25 . Our film is targeted at an audience of that age as they are stereotyped as staying out late at night partying, smoking, drinking and dressed inappropriately.










I have chosen the character Evie Zamora from the film thirteen to compare to the main character in my film, because she is a typical teenager dressing inappropriately and coming home early hours of the morning from partying. In this film, teenagers are stereotyped to miss behaving smoking and taking drugs. The main character in our film is also a young woman coming back from a party early morning she is seen smoking at a train station.

Match Cut Prelim Exercisse

In our media lesson our group filmed a opening sequence to a film lasting two minutes. We made the film up and wrote it down on a storyboard. For the film we used tracking shots , establishing shots, close ups and mid shots. We then edited it using final cut pro. We done lots of match cuts and used live pro to make titles for our sequence. We also used soundtrack pro to make suspenseful background music for our opening.

Introduction to cameras and Health and safety tutorial

In our media lesson we was shown how to use the video cameras. We learnt how to fix the camera onto a tripod and how to take it off. We also leart how to lock the camera onto the tridod to protect the camera from getting damaged. We then learnt how to focus the cameras and zoom in and out and all other nessacary fuctions we needed to know for the camera.

Crime thriller- Focuses on a criminals and involves murders, robberies, chases and shootouts

Science-fiction thriller- Has Aliens and other out worldly things

Horror thriller- Involves unrealistic creatures and the main characters in danger

Religious thriller- Involves Religious objects, institutions and questions

Spy thriller- often has government agents , violent actions and terrorists

Drama thriller- has elements of a thriller film and has a twist e.g. The Illusionist, The Interpreter and The Prestige.

The title sequence the opening i looked at was Sherlock Holmes. The style of the title which is old english makes it look very mysterious, hand written and secretive. In the opening the titles introduce the actors, director, producer and people that were involved in the making of the sherlock holmes film. In the opening there are drawrings of the actors alongside the titles to let the audience see the actors and to make it intressting. The titels fade in and out of each shot which create a mysterious effect , their are long shots to show the location and medium shots of the actors. The way the titles look make the film seem intersting and suspenceful.

Analysis of thriller clip

In our media class. I watched the opening scene of 5 thriller films. The openings i watched where from the films Seven, Arlington Road, Marothon Man , The Shining and Dead Calm.
The opening of the thriller i decided to talk about is Martathon Man.

In the opening of Marathon Man there is a man running on a field in his full running gear, we see this in a tracking shot of him. The shot also shows the location he is in which is a field. As the camera is follwing the man running he runs in a dark lit room , where we see a man in a suit opeing a locker and bringing out a box. This creates suspence as the audience wants to know what is in this box and the low lighting makes it sevretive. The background music in this opening is suspenseful because it is of people sceaming. The titels of the film come in from left to right and then fade away .

Bait tutorial

In our Media lesson we had a tutorial on editing, we lernt how to create a story by editing many different video clips into one and also added music we done this using a program called Final Cut Pro on Aple Mac computers. I started this by watching a video clip and marking the footage I wanted to use for my film and inserted it to lower pannel at the bottom of the screen to create match and jump cuts. I then done this to numourus clips and using the razor tool inserted some of my clips into the middle of other clips. I then added a backing soundtrack of my choice to my video clip.

City

This is an image of the city, there is the red london busses which is a typical sight in london city their are also tall buildings which you often find in the city. This is a stereotypical image of the city because of the red busses.

Quick

This image represents quick, the man on the bike is blurred and the bus isn't to show the biker is quicker. The biker is in the middle of the picture so that we focus on him.

Happiness

This image shows happiness , the man in this picture in smiling to show he is happy. It is a close up shot of him to show his smile while he is gazing at something.

Suspense

Suspense is an element in a film, which causes tension it often keeps viewers on the edge of their seat not knowing what will happen next. It also gives its audience a feeling of uncertainy and anxiety about the outcome of actions. Suspense is often an element only a thriller can diliver and not a comedy film.

Thriller

There are many different types of thrillers for example, legal, political, conspiracy, action and many more. A thriller has lots of suspense and twists in it. These elements keep the viewers watching as they want to know what will happen next, as it is very unpredictable as the unexpected always happens. In thrillers there is nearly always a protagonist who is the good guy in the film, a hero and a antagonist who is the bad person in the film, a villain.

Collateral

In the film Collateral there was various scenes that were suspenseful. The scene i found most thrilling was the scene where Vincent came to kill Annie, in the building . I found it thrilling because Max ( the protagonist) could see Victor ( the antagonist) and Annie from the outside of the building and we could see that Vincent was in the wrong room. Once Victor notices this the tension starts to build because we know he is going to kill Annie and knows where she is. The fast paced edit with Max running to the building and Victor trying to find Annie in a pitch black room is suspenseful because we don't know if Max will make it in time or if Victor will find Annie in the dark. The loud Music and the dark lighting help create suspence and make it thrilling.
