Match Cut Prelim Exercise

In this lesson my group had to film a short sequence lasting up to two minutes of somthing that we made up and written down on a storyboard before hand. We had to use a various amount of shots e.g close ups mid shots , an establishing shot and a tracking shot as camilla walked down the hall we then cut the scence to see her by the door from my perpective as she enters. After we flimed our shots for the scenes we then use the programme final cut pro to edit, where we wanted to cut the scence that we filmed after a certain amount of time. We then used live cut pro to add titles to our finished sequence e.g directed by and sound by. Finally we then had to use the programme soundtrack pro to add effect to the sequence to make it thrilling.

Premliminary match cut film

Premliminary match cut film

In lesson we were given a synopsis which was "a character opens a door walks into a room, sits down opposite another character and they share a few lines of dialogue", with this we had to create a short scene including,

  • An example of shot reverse shot
  • At least one match cut
  • An understanding of the 180 degree rule
This was more easier in filming because we used some techniques that we used from our bag swaping scene, also we were more familiar with the camera.

Bait Tutorial
Our media lesson was based on using final cut pro and the Bait tutorial. We had to learnn how to edit, cut and put soundtracks on clips. On final cut pro there were clips of a short sequence called "Bait", using these clips we edited and cut scenes to how many seconds we wanted also we had to choose important moments of the scene. We were told to use jump cuts and razor cuts this made our sequence more effective. I had to watch if i was satisfyed with my sequence and after i did that i added a backing track in the begginning of my clip.

The art of the title sequence

Analysis of Sherlock Holmes

The title sequence i chose was Sherlock Holmes. The style of the titles are in old Victorian writing. The titles show the name of the actors and actresses who are in the film aswell as the producers, directors, co-producers, production designers, editor and etc. The images in the sequence turns from drawings to actual images, the types of shots used are close and medium shots of the characters in the film. The way how they images turn from drawings to images appealed to me, i think that was very effective because it almost looked as camera shots.

The structure of thriller openings

Thriller Openings (The shining)

The thriller opening i chose to talk about was The Shining. The opening scene shows a landscape of mountains and the sea, the camera is moving at fast pace also there is suspenseful music playing under. The music more suspenseful as we see i car from a birds eye view shot, seeing the car driving through the mountains leave the audience feeling very anxious. The muisc gets very ghosty as we see a close up of the yellow car, there are long shots of the landscape and the titles running throughout the sequence.

Defination of suspense and thriller

Suspense and Thriller

What is Suspensce ?

Suspense is something that keeps you on the edge of your seat, it makes you think of what's going to happen next and it causes massive tension.
Suspense leaves you with not knowning what will happen, it is opposite to knowledge and it makes you feel anxious and unsure about what's going to happen in the dramatic moment.

What is a Thriller ?

A Thriller is made up of a protagonist and a antagonist. A protaginistic is a hero and a antagonist is a villian, the sub genre's within a thriller are action, conspiracy, drama, political and crime. Thrillers are shown with very fast pace movement along with a lot of action, it makes the audience feel uncertain becuase they don't know what to expect.

Detailed analysis of the thriller Fight Club

Detailed analysis of then thriller Fight Club

Norton plays the unmaned (Protagonist) , he forms a fight club with soap salesman Tyler Durden played by Brad Pitt. The nameless narator Edward Norton is a travelling automoblie company employee who suffers from insomnia. His doctor refuses to give him medication and advies him to visit a support group to witness more severe suffering. After a flight home from a business trip. The narrator finds his apartment destroyed by an explosion. He calls Tyler Durden ( Brad Pitt) a salesman whom he befriended on the flight, and they meet at a bar. The pan around Brad Pitt helps the audience to see the surroundings of where he is, the heavy rock music playing in the backgroung is effective as it sets the mood of the atmosphere as you see contestants fighting. The fast pace editing is also effective as it shows many different scenes as people prepare to compete against the fighters in the fight club.

Thriller and subgenres

A thriller is broad genre of literature, film. television and gaming that includes numerous and often overlapping sub genres. Thrillers are often hybrids there are many different types for example there are suspense thrillers, action or adventure thrillers, sci-fi thrillers (such as Alien 1979) crime caper thrillers such (as the French Connections 1971) , western thrillers (such as High Noon 1952), film noir thrillers (such as Double Indemnity 1944), even romantic comedy- thrillers (such as safety last 1923)
Suspense thrillers inspire me at the moment as they are fun to watch and always keep you sitting at the edge of your seat as you waiting for somthing to happen.

Definition of Suspense and Thriller

Pleasurable excitement and anticipation regarding an outcome, such as the ending of a mystery novel. For exampel whilst watching Collateral the scene where Vincent (Protagonist) enters the building This scene builds tension as he is trying to get in contact with Anne but fails as he's battery is low as the killer is trying to kill her.
It builds suspense as he enters her office, while she hides in the room the use of the shot reverse shot is effective as it shows the anticipation on Annie's face.

Art of Title sequence

The title sequence the opening i looked at was Sherlock Holmes. The style of the title which is old english makes it look very mysterious, hand written and secretive. In the opening the titles introduce the actors, director, producer and people that were involved in the making of the sherlock holmes film. In the opening there are drawrings of the actors alongside the titles to let the audience see the actors and to make it intressting. The titels fade in and out of each shot which create a mysterious effect , their are long shots to show the location and medium shots of the actors. The way the titles look make the film seem intersting and suspenceful.

Analysis of Sherlock Homes

The style of title is in the style of old english as the end of the letters end it long ticks as if you was to write a letter wiv a pen that u had to dip in ink. The title Sequence highlights the impressive Sherlock Holmes opening credits, including an interview with the designer. By Jason Kottke .
The types of shots used in the tiltle sequence are Close ups of characters and meduim to long shots.
The music in the background as it shows different characeters is effective as it creates the mood of the the opening scene. Also the use of the characters been shown as a painting reinforces the idea that this is a old film.

Analysis of thriller clip

In our media class. I watched the opening scene of 5 thriller films. The openings i watched where from the films Seven, Arlington Road, Marothon Man , The Shining and Dead Calm.
The opening of the thriller i decided to talk about is Martathon Man.

In the opening of Marathon Man there is a man running on a field in his full running gear, we see this in a tracking shot of him. The shot also shows the location he is in which is a field. As the camera is follwing the man running he runs in a dark lit room , where we see a man in a suit opeing a locker and bringing out a box. This creates suspence as the audience wants to know what is in this box and the low lighting makes it sevretive. The background music in this opening is suspenseful because it is of people sceaming. The titels of the film come in from left to right and then fade away .

Bait tutorial

In our Media lesson we had a tutorial on editing, we lernt how to create a story by editing many different video clips into one and also added music we done this using a program called Final Cut Pro on Aple Mac computers. I started this by watching a video clip and marking the footage I wanted to use for my film and inserted it to lower pannel at the bottom of the screen to create match and jump cuts. I then done this to numourus clips and using the razor tool inserted some of my clips into the middle of other clips. I then added a backing soundtrack of my choice to my video clip.

The screen on the right is the edited clip of the original clip on the left hand side. The clips I edited where inserted to the bottom panel.
